Brick porch steps in Michigan rarely sink for one single reason. By the time a homeowner notices a gap, a lean, or a cracked riser, several things are usually working at once. Understanding what is happening underneath the steps is the first part of fixing them in a way that lasts.

Soil movement and poor base preparation

Brick steps sit on top of a base. That base may be poured concrete, compacted gravel, fill dirt, or a mix. When the base is sound, the steps sit level for decades. When the base shifts, the steps shift with it.

Common base-related causes include:

  • Fill dirt that was never properly compacted
  • Soil that erodes over time as water runs through it
  • A footing that does not extend below the frost line
  • Tree roots growing under or beside the step structure
  • Construction or grading work near the home that disturbed the surrounding soil

Michigan soil is a mix of clay and sand depending on the location. Clay holds water and swells. Sandy soils drain faster but can wash out. Both can lead to step movement over the years.

Water drainage problems

Water is the most common contributor to sinking steps. If the slope around the porch sends water toward the step base, or if downspouts dump water near the steps, the soil under the structure stays wet. Wet soil moves more than dry soil. Wet soil also freezes harder in winter.

Signs that drainage is part of the picture:

  • Standing water around the base of the steps after a rain
  • Downspouts that empty within a few feet of the steps
  • Erosion or visible washing in the soil beside the steps
  • Cracks in the mortar joints between bricks that have widened over a year or two

Freeze-thaw expansion

Once water is in the soil and in the mortar, freeze-thaw goes to work. Frozen soil expands and pushes upward. Frozen water in mortar joints expands and breaks the bond between brick and mortar. Across a Michigan winter, both happen many times.

The combination can leave steps lower in some places, higher in others, and increasingly uneven from year to year.

Age and original construction quality

Older steps were built by hand to whatever standard was common at the time. Some are still rock solid after decades. Others were built fast, on a thin base, with mortar that was never going to last in Michigan weather. There is no way to predict from the outside which is which.

When the original construction is the underlying issue, even good repairs may not stop the movement. In those cases, a rebuild from a proper footing is often more cost effective long term than repeated patching.

Signs that sinking steps are becoming unsafe

  • Risers that are no longer the same height across the run
  • Gaps wide enough to catch a shoe or a heel
  • Loose brick that moves when stepped on
  • Cracks running through multiple courses
  • A visible lean from one side
  • Separation where the steps meet the porch slab

Trip hazards on steps are not just inconvenient. They are a real injury risk, especially in winter when surfaces are slick.
